TOYOTA (NIGERIA) LIMITED REASSURES ITS CUSTOMERS
We would like to use this opportunity to clarify the position of Toyota (Nigeria) Limited with respect to Toyota Motor Corporation’s Recall Programme announced in the American, European and Chinese markets and its relevance to Nigeria in particular.
During the last week of January this year, TMC announced its intention to recall certain models of Toyota vehicles in American, European and Chinese markets in order to inspect and fix a likely problem that could have arisen. This is a proactive and pre-emptive step. These developments were widely covered by the global media, which caused anxiety and apprehension among some of our customers as well. Through press advertorials exposed earlier by Toyota (Nigeria) Limited, TNL sought to dispel customer anxieties by indicating the circumstances under which the rare problem may occur, which is not obtaining in Nigeria.
The Problem: In geographical areas experiencing cold winter climate, where there is a tendency to use the heater in the car, there is a possibility of water condensing and contributing to the quicker wear and tear of the sliding surface of the accelerator, which in turn can lead to impacting the required friction on the sliding surface of the accelerator pedal, resulting in the accelerator pedal becoming hard to depress or in extreme cases, the accelerator pedal getting stuck.
Solution: After intensive studies on the possibility of such rare occurrence, TMC carried out rigorous tests and evolved the corrective measure of inserting a Precision Cut Steel Reinforcement Bar on the accelerator mechanism that may have become worn out.
Symptom: The symptom of such a defect manifesting is sluggishness on the accelerator pedal response and in extreme case, the accelerator pedal getting stuck.
Relevance of the problem to Nigeria: Apart from no known cases having occurred in Africa, the chances of this problem occurring in Nigeria is extremely unlikely. Nigerian climate does not fall in the cold temperature zone and the likely use of car heater also is very rare. We are therefore confident that the rare problem is very unlikely to occur on Toyota vehicles imported through Toyota (Nigeria) Limited.
However, keeping Toyota Motor Corporation’s cardinal value of Customer First in perspective, Toyota (Nigeria) Limited will carry out reassurance checks on 3 of the models consisting of chassis numbers in a select band of chassis numbers provided by TMC to eliminate the rare possibility even further. The 3 models in reference are Toyota RAV4, Toyota Avensis and certain sub models of Toyota Corolla.
