Prado outperforms all expectations...on and off the road
H - TEMS (Toyota Electronic Modulated Suspension) closely controls the damping force of the shock absorbers to provide a stable body position and smooth ride comfort. The control switch offers a choice of four modes for your preferred level of damping. an auto-levelling function on the electronically-controlled rear air suspension keeps the vehicle height constant for stable driving even as passenger numbers and loads change. A convenient switch also allows the driver to select three vehicle heights: High for driving on rough roads; Low for easy access into and out of the vehicle and easy loading and unloading; and Normal. The vehicle automatically returns to Normal when driving speed exceeds 10km/h in Low or 50km/h in High (Optional)
The Prado's off-road heritage is evident in its excellent ground clearance and high approach and departure angles. Together with outstanding hill-climbing performance, excellent maximum tolerable roll-over angle and good fording capacities, they contribute to the outstanding all-round off-road performance in difficult conditions. (Always have your vehicle serviced after driving through water.)
The Prado's full-time 4WD system delivers excellent drive through performance by changing between high- and low-range setting depending on road conditions. A 'TORSEN' LSD (Limited Slip Differential) on the centre differential gear, the first use in the world of this new mechanism, distributes optimum driving power between the front and rear wheels in response to driving conditions. It provides excellent stability, control and traction performance, especially when accelerating or driving at high speeds.
Should the Prado ever become stuck with the wheels on the side spinning freely, at the touch of a switch the rear differential gear can be locked to enhance traction.
A dual fuel tank system with a total capacity of 180 litres substantially extends driving range. Fuel in the sub tank is automatically transferred to the main tank when needed. The resin main tank and aluminium-plated, lead-free sub tank are environment friendly.

PRADO SAFETY

The Prado incorporates a number of advanced safety measures which help to optimise vehicle control and prevent accidents. They include active driving control systems that help to optimise the basic elements of driving operation, especially during an emergency manoeuvre. The Prado comprehensive passive safety measures begin with a crash safety body. Inside the high integrity cabin, primary occupant restraint is provided by 3-point seatbelts, including the centre seats in the 2nd and 3rd rows. A head impact protection structure is also incorporated.

The crash safety body comprise a high integrity cabin, with front and rear crumple zones that help absorb impact energy in a collision. The high integrity cabin structure dissipates impact energy into the entire body. The structure supporting the brake pedal is designed to reduce the amount the brake pedal retracts in a frontal collision, helping to reduce injury to the driver.

The SRS airbags are activated by a strong frontal impact in a collision. Their inflation force is appropriately controlled in response to the severity of the collision. In a lateral collision, in addition to the SRS side airbags which help reduce the impact to the occupant's upper torso, the SRS curtain shield airbags which instantly cover the front and rear door window area on the side of the impact, help reduce the impact to the occupants' head.

The Prado A-TRC (Active Traction Control) system incorporates Downhill Assist Control and Hill-start Assist Control. When descending a steep slope, the driver can activate Downhill Assist Control by pressing a switch. Downhill Assist Control regulates the braking hydraulic pressure on all four wheels to control the vehicle at low speeds for excellent vehicle stability and manoeuvrability. Hill-start Assist Control detects vehicle slip during an uphill start on a steep slope and regulates the braking hydraulic pressure on all four wheels to reduce the amount of slip.

When a computer detects adverse driving conditions such as muddy or unpaved roads, which require the traction supplied by a rear different lock to overcome, the A-TRC system is activated. A-TRC controls engine output and braking hydraulic pressure independently on all four wheels, supplementing drive force to each wheel to compensate for slip, providing a strong LSD (Limited Slip Differential) effect that enables stable starts and acceleration, normally achieved by locking the rear differential.

To optimise vehicle stability while cornering, we used VSC (Vehicle Stability Control). VSC comes into operation when the car begins to skid due to a sudden change in steering or in the road surface. It acts to reduce excessive side slipping of the tyres helping to return the vehicle to a position of comfortable control rather than improving the limits of driving performance.

ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) regulates braking hydraulic pressure to help prevent the wheels from locking up and ensuring vehicle stability when braking on slippery roads, or during sudden brake application.

The EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution) control utilises the ABS system to optimise the distribution of braking force between the front and rear wheels in response to the driving conditions and vehicle load. During cornering braking, ABS with EBD also optimises the distribution of braking force between the left and right wheels, helping to maintain vehicle stability. These functions contribute to the excellent braking performance of the Prado.

The outboard front seats are equipped with 3-point ELR seatbelts and headrests. When sensors detect a strong impact in a frontal collision, pretentioners rewind the outboard front seatbelts instantly to help assist occupant restraint. In addition, force limiters help to reduce the force on the upper torso by releasing part of the force when loads surpass a specified level. (Pretentioners and force limiters are only fitted in combination with the optional SRS airbags).

All 2nd row seats are fitted with 3-point ELR-ALR seatbelts and headrests. All 3rd row seats are fitted with 3-point ELR seatbelts and headrests. The 2nd row seats also have two anchor bars for fixing an ISOFIX-compliant child seat.

The WIL (Whiplash Injury Lessening) concept used in the front seats, helps to reduce injury to the vertebra in the neck in a rear-end collision. It supports both the head and back simultaneously, helping to reduce the load to the neck.

*SRS: Supplementary Restraint System. For the SRS to work effectively, seatbelts must be worn correctly at all times. Child seats should be used in the rear seats. Please do not use accessories for the seats which cover the parts where the SRS side airbag should inflate. Such accessories may prevent the SRS side airbags from activating correctly, causing serious injury.
